Top 5 Point Guards in the League
Because of the stellar point guard play we have seen in the first two rounds of these playoffs I think it is an excellent time to speak on the debate that is ringing out across the NBA: Who are the best point guards in the league? Heres my top 5, let me know yours:
1. Deron Williams
2. Chris Paul
3. Steve Nash
4. Rajon Rondo
5. Derrick Rose
Outside Looking In (in no particular order): Jameer Nelson, Tony Parker, Brandon Jennings, Chauncey Billups, Russell Westbrook (Tyreke Evans is not an actual point guard to me)
And discuss...

Kidd definitely deserves at least honorable mention - #5 in assists during the reg season, 5th highest PG assists in postseason. Even though he doesn't score as much as the other guys he was key in getting Dallas to the playoffs this year.
ReplyDelete1. CP3
ReplyDelete2. Williams
3. Rose (I like Rose I just don't know how strong of a passer he is.)
4. Rondo- even though I am clearly biased towards Rondo, I do question how many of his awesome assist come from the fact that he surrounded by Pierce, Garnett, Allen and House.
5. Nash
I agree Kidd gets an honorable mention, but I expected even more from him this season and was low key disappointed.
I think we have to clarify the purpose of a point guard first. If the question is "who is the best basketball player who happens to be a point guard?" that is different from "who is the best point guard at being a point guard?" I'm 100% positive you're all confused and asking what the hell does that mean. Let me explain.
ReplyDeleteTake D-Rose for example. He is a great scorer, super tough, gets in the lane for some crazy ass layups, and carries his team. But is the job of a point guard to be the primary scorer and best overall player on the team? Or is the job of a point guard to exemplify purely point guard skills like outstanding court vision, facilitating crisp plays, promoting his teammates scoring with great passes, taking the ball up court the fastest during fast breaks, etc.?
Clarifying this question- to me- would take someone like D-Rose from a #1 position (amazing basketball players who happens to be a PG) to a #7 or #8 (ppl who best exemplify purely PG skill sets).

4. Rajon Rondo
5. Russel Westbrook
I'll go into detail later
Based on what I saw last night and the "definition of a point guard" GZ provided then I would definitely move Rondo up on my list. He does an amazing job directing traffic throughout the game, makes superb passes and finds a way to step up and fill in when he is needed by his team. He not only makes opportunities for himself but for his team, and as a young guy on an old team I think he will be holding a spot in the top 5 for a while.
